I bet you're talking about Nobel prize. No formal explanation is given for this but there is a story behind this, being speculated. Alfred Nobel once falled in love with a girl who later dated a mathematician. Since then Nobel dislike mathematician and so the prize has no share for any mathematician.

Well maybe because mathematics is such a broad subject, I can name a few so called mathematicians who have won the Nobel prize
The physics and economics prizes usually go to mathematicians. Both subjects require a certain amount of mathematical knowledge.
Look here for all winners and see how many mathematicians you find, John Nash being one that comes to mind, from the film a beautiful mind!

I' ve read a funny story about it. Alfred Nobel's wife / girlfriend (I'm not sure) was in love with a mathematician. He was jealous about it and that's why he never founded a prize for mathematicians. Maybe not true, but more funny than the others explanations!! :P :)

there is not any Nobel Prize for arithmetic. a worry-free legend states that Nobel desperate against a prize in arithmetic because of the fact a woman - reported to be the two his fiance, spouse, or mistress - rejected him for or cheated on him with a everyday mathematician, generally claimed to be Gosta Mittag-Leffler. there is not any historic data to help the tale, and Nobel became in no way married.

Because the Nobel Prizes were first created to give money to aspiring young scientists to help them do experiments, and you really can't experiment much with math.
