It is said that when Leonardo Da Vinci painted it, his wife was pregnant and so he was happy. That explains the smiling Mona lisa, but his wife died shortly and so if you observe the painting you will find that the smile has a sad note in it.Also Dan Brown's bestseller 'DA VINCI CODE' states that Leonardo knew a great secret and hence he potrays the Mona lisa as if she hid a secret unknown to the world.
