My girlfriend is always complaining about breaking her nails. My question is, why do toe nails seem to be ever so much stronger than finger nails, they never seem to break easy?

I've no idea but my thumb nails are indestructible (its a shame that can't be said about my other nails though).

The nails of the toes are not subjected to the same constant abuse of the nails on the fingers.
Cerotin is the main ingredient of nails and hair. To help get stronger nails, eating more jello does work.

The outermost part of the skin, which is the epidermis is made up of three layers namely: Cornified layer, Granular layer and Malphigian layer. The malphigian layer secretes two hormones : melain and keratine. The keratine is responsible for strong nails, feathers , ears, beaks etc. I think the toe nails are stronger than the fingernails because the hand gets into water most when it comes to washing and eating thereby softening the nails and cuticle.

The toes don't take as much abuse as finger nails if you think about it. the toenails are always covered and comfy cosy, rarely have to do any hard work, whereas finger nails are exposed to the elements, knocked and bumped as part of normal everyday life and are put in and out of water on a regular basis which can make them more brittle.

Our nails are there as beneath them is allegedly the most sensitive parts of our body, they serve and PROTECT like little soldiers. In Neanderthal times, feet, and our tootsies were far more likely to be injured than hands.

Lol! I think hands are more thinner and fragile than feet are, like, fingers are thinner then toes, I dunno but to me my nails dont break that easily...and i hate it when girls are always complaining about it.

they don't take as much abuse as fingernails - they're protected in shoes and they're shorter - that's why they don't break.
