That's a pretty vague question. It depends on the car, but generally, yes. Petrol cars are faster than diesels. But diesel technology is catching up to gas. Like BMW's 3 series diesel acelerates almost as quickly as it's petrol counterpart, has a similar top speed and still manages to get 40mpg. But diesels also generally are also torquier too.

gas motors are definitely faster from a dead stop, but at freeway speeds diesel motors are very responsive.. the biggest advantage of diesel over gasoline is the milage rendered by the diesel motor, and the longevity of the motor itself since diesels run at much cooler tempatures.. i have a dodge with a cummons turbo diesel that is known in the trucking circles as a "million mile motor" i also two mercedes diesels that still run like new, one of them is 38 years old..

The air and the fuel in a petrol are already mixed before they reach the cylinders. The compressed air & fuel mixture is compressed and ignites by a spark. Plus the moving parts of the engine in petrol cars are lighter therefore they can run on high RPM.

depends on the size of the engine and type etc, although with turbos etc deisal engines are a lot better than they used to be
