3.) The Day The Earth Stood Still(1951)- One of the greatest sci-fi movies ever.

I Am a Fugitive From a Chain Gaing, starring Paul Muni, is a classic in the desperate, bleak ending sense. Not all the classics had happy endings and this one is a shocker because the protagonist is a hero of sorts.
