I am worry about mold or mildew damage more than anything else.

There have been houses for a much longer time then there has been air conditioning. I'd say little chance of damage.

If you are woried about humidity (which can contribute to mold growth) you might want to get a de-humidifier and plug it into a christmas light type timer so it only runs an hour or two per day.

Possibly a lot. My friends air went down while she was away and the entire house was full of mold when she returned. Also all her Christmas decorations were melted. She spends summers up North. If your air is off in the winter - probably no harm, but would definately set up a dehumidifier that empties itself. You can hose several models right into a sink. Always a good idea to have someone check your house inside and out once in a while when you are away.
