I have a 2000 Chevy C3500 Crew Cab dually. I was told the same thing. I was told the fuel filter is in the frame by the rear of the drivers side door. There should be a label on the wiring harness right near the fuel filter. One of the digits in the number on that label tells the Parts store which one you need. I am thinking that by "filter" and asking about wiring, you're talking about the fuel pump itself? Reason I ask is because what I am describing is the location of my fuel pump and wiring harness which has the number that they are asking you to locate and provide to them.

Tell them to cut the crap and give you a gas filter. It is an inline filter, pretty much the same one for all trucks and you can put this on yourself with ease. The other posters are correct as to the position where it is. I stuff a rag in the ends of the filter and the gas lines so I won't get too much spilled gas all over me crawling around under the truck.
Good Luck!

Put the key in the "ON" position and wait about 10 seconds for the fuel pressure to build up. Or maybe you can skip the first time trying and go straight to the second time. LOL

Get the filter from chev dealer, bring the VIN incase it helps them figure out which one you need. I would not be surprised if it was the 481 style.
