There is a crack or fault somewhere in the chimney breast maybe in the portion in your roof.... maybe the breast itself is cracked, maybe the breast is not properly attached to your back wall or (if it's a terraced house) the joining wall between two houses, maybe you have movement in the foundations of your house which has knocked and faulted the alignment of the chimney breast ... smoke, we all know, should be coming out of the top! therefore if it's escaping through an exit other than that then you may have a serious problem.
Apart from making everything black (!!!) - it's also carbonmonoxide - a killer.
Call a qualified builder/roofer in to check for you.

The chimney needs to be inspected? It may very likely have cracks in the cement between the bricks...very common of older fireplaces. They can age or shift from ground shifting, settling or earthquakes. Should be inspected about every 2 years or 4. When was the last tme it was inspected?
