The median is just the middle number in a set of numbers placed in order.

so if you had a set of numbers:
3, 13, 7, 5, 21, 23, 39, 23, 40, 23, 14, 12, 56, 23, 29

you place them in order and get:
3, 5, 7, 12, 13, 14, 21, 23, 23, 23, 23, 29, 39, 40, 56

and the middle number is 23

basically a median is the middle number of a group of numbers. For example. 1 5 7 8 3 4 6 2

if you put that in order: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

the middle number is five, meaning that is a median.

Median usually refers to the average of various amounts or numbers. If I traveled 50 miles then stopped for a rest, 70 miles & stopped then 90 miles before stopping, the median distance of those trips would be (50+70+90)/3 or 210/3=70

line up the # from < to > then find the middle #.
ex. 3, 6, 9, 5, 1, 8
so first put the # in least to greatest.
1, 3, 5, 6, 8, 9. then find the middle #
this would be 5.5 because it is in between 5 and 6
