Difference between comics, manga and graphic novels?

I see them as all the same, All have pictures. Is there a major difference beweent them?

let me explain more. both have pictures and words and story lines.

Comics:

A comic book or comicbook is a magazine or book containing sequential art in the form of a narrative. Comic books are often called comics for short. Although the term implies otherwise, the subject matter in comic books is not necessarily humorous, and in fact its dramatic seriousness varies widely. The term "comics" in this context does not refer to comic strips (such as Peanuts or Dilbert). In the last quarter of the 20th century, greater acceptance of the comics form among the general reading populace coincided with a greater usage of the term graphic novel, often meant to differentiate a book of comics with a spine from its stapled, pamphlet form, but the difference between the terms seems fuzzy at best as comics become more widespread in libraries, mainstream bookstores, and other places.

Some of the earliest comic books were simply collections of comic strips that had originally been printed in newspapers, and it was the commercial success of these collections led to work being created specifically for the comic-book form, which fostered specific conventions such as splash pages. Long-form comic books, generally with hardcover or trade-paper binding came to be known as graphic novels, but as noted above, the term's definition is especially fluid. Like jazz and a handful of other cultural artifacts, comic books are a rare indigenous American art form, [1] [2] though prototypical examples of the form exist.

American comic books have become closely associated with the superhero sub-genre. In the UK, the term comic book is used to refer to American comic books by their readers and collectors, while the general populace would mainly consider a comic book a hardcover book collecting comics stories. The analogous term in the United Kingdom is a comic, short for comic paper or comic magazine.

Manga:

Manga (漫画, Manga?) is the Japanese word for comics and print cartoons. Outside of Japan, it usually refers specifically to Japanese comics. As of 2006, manga represents a $5 billion global market.[1] Manga developed from a mixture of ukiyo-e and foreign styles of drawing, and took its current form shortly after World War II. It comes mainly in black and white, except for the covers and sometimes the first few pages, and in some Animanga all the pages are colored. Popular manga are often adapted into anime (Japanese for animation) once a market interest has been established. (Manga is sometimes mistakenly called "anime" by those not familiar when not animated.) Adapted stories are often modified to appeal to a more mainstream market. Although not as common, original anime is sometimes adapted into manga (such as the Gundam franchise, Neon Genesis Evangelion and Cowboy Bebop).

Graphic Novel:

A graphic novel (GN) is a long-form work in the comics form, usually with lengthy and complex storylines, and often aimed at mature audiences. In contrast to the familiar comic magazines, a graphic novel is typically bound using materials of more durable qualities, using a light card stock for softcover bindings or a heavier card for the hardback editions, enclosed in a dust jacket. Graphic novels generally are sold in bookstores and comic book shops, rather than on comic books' original point of sale, newsstands. The term can also encompass a short story collection, or collected issues of previously published comic books republished in a single large volume.

There is a difference, mostly it's in content and origin.

Manga has not only Japanese styled art, but typically reads right to left. A lot of times it's printed in black and white. They're sold in bookstores, there are shorter versions that are about 20 or so pages compared to the books which are about 200 pages.

Comics are more American. It's American style art, a lot are in color. They're typically short and stapled. You're more likely to find this in a comic store than in a book store.

Graphic novels are exactly what the name implies. A visual book. "Fray" is a good example. You will find graphic novels in bookstores and in comic shops. A lot of times it takes a popular (manga or comic) into a long story. Think of it like either a collection of all your manga/comics smashed into one book. Or sometimes it's like a movie, where it's an entirely different story and it's long and has a definte beginning, climax and end, unlike much of the short "TV show" comics and manga.

Comics: Most often American, they are about 8 inches by 11 inches and come in color. They are read left to right. Serialized weekly, monthly, or quarterly, they feature the exploits of super heros, super villains, and can be drawn by differnt artists. Many of them sell advertiseing space right inside the comic. The backgrounds are always of real world objects.

Manga: Most often Japanese, they are usually about 5 inches by 7 1/2 inches. Some have color illustrations in the front (Crono Crusade, Tokyo Babylon, Amazing Agent Luna, Fruits Basket to name a few) of the book, and they usually are read right to left. They are serialized on a schedule that can change, and are only drawn by one artist (like Mia Ikumi [Tokyo Mew Mew]) / team (like CLAMP [X[-1999], Tokyo Babylon]) Manga has several major genres, and onyl sells advertiseing space at the back of the book. The main story is almost always in black and white ink. Many times, a background helps to express the mood of the story of characters.

Because they all share the common trait of having pictures you think that somehow makes them the same? If I took a picture of a beautiful women naked and then another one of a pile of dead bodies in a ditch would you think they are similar?
