I'm not big on gory films, but some great scary ones that haven't been listed:
Rosemary's Baby--I watched this for the first time while pregnant. not a smart idea.
Blood Simple--not very well known. nothing supernatural and not in-your-face scary. but definitely unnerving.
Session 9--also not well known and definitely underrated. four hazmat cleaners go into a broken down insane asylum to clear out some asbestos and the current residents aren't happy to see them.
Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead--See the originals for good zombie fun--these are nice a gory
The Omen (original)--how can one little kid be so freaky
The Legend of Hell House--four paranormal investigators spend the night in a haunted house-yeah its a standard formula but still pretty creepy--The Haunting (the original NOT the remake) is a more subtle version of the same thing
In the Mouth of Madness--John Carpenter directs with Sam Neill--An insurance investigator goes looking for a missing author and finds him...unfortunately. Things spiral out of control from there and never recover.

The original "Texas Chainsaw Massacre", 1974, and "The Last House On The Left", 1972, are both fairly scary and bloody films.

For pure gore so dorky it's funny, find a copy of "Dead Alive". I think Lord Of The Rings directer Peter Jackson was behind this mess long before he got any cred. You won't believe your eyes that some of it was even filmed. Don't worry, it's too dumb to be scary or gross.

Doom
Deep Blue Sea (not that scary but I loved that movie and it does have bodies floating in the water..)
Hollow Man (same deal as Deep Blue Sea except there's only one body floating in the water and yes, I did love that movie)
