your information is incomplete
1. 512 mb is the capacity in terms of the volume of primary data storage the main memory or ram is able to store / handle
the greater the ram amount, the better u'r computer is able to operate
the clock speed of the ram is also important in that the faster the ram, speedier is the computing operation
this has to be supported by the bridge between processor & ram > called the fsb or front side bus

2. 256 mb i guess u've understood, is half the primary data storage volume or amount of 512 mb
ddr2 is a particular typpe of ram having clock speeds 400 mhz, 533 mhz & 667 mhz

so you will appreciate that the picture is not complete
you have to specify type of ram of 512 mb
processor & fsb details will give an even better picture

>> post / mail & i will give u detailed comparitive !

First, i should say the one with 512 RAM is better. ( if it is a DDR ram or DDRSDram )

Difference between 512 mb and 256 mb is simply this. A RAM is a computer's physical memory where it stores the files which are used very frequently at run-time, for fast access. The more files your computer can store to RAM at run-time, the faster your computer will respond to your requests. Thus, the more megabytes (mb) your ram is the faster your computer will be.

In layman's terms i would say,
Think it this way:
- A computer is like a 'cook'
- A RAM on a computer is a cook's bench.
- A harddisk on your computer is the refrigerator located far away from the cook. (Harddisk: all files are stored on a harddisk. Think it as a huge RAM however very very very slow. -its access speed cannot be even compared to RAM's access speed- )

Now, suppose that you are a very rich man and you live in a castle and you have 2 cooks serving you.(-nice huh :) ). One day you requested a nice, spicy, bloody beef and a tasty salad from both of your cooks. (You ordered the same menu 'cuz you wanna see which one cooks better and faster.)
Your cooks know what to do, how to do, however one of them has a very small bench (256 sq. cm), the other one has a larger one (512 sq. cm).

They both start at the same time, they go for beef, spice, oil etc. to the refrigerator and put them on the bench. (Which technically means that your computer is booting, loading the necessary files to RAM :) )

Poor cook with smaller bench has no room left on the bench for salad ingredients, the other one has everything he needs for the menu you ordered. So which one will finish first?

Hopefully this helps you :)

Meanwhile, if you have enough money to buy a laptop with 1GB RAM, it will be smart thing to buy it.

Peace.

DDR2 describes the density and the form factor of the RAM. However, the 512MB does not have this description. Are the notebooks of equal CPU power? If so, they will use relatively the same RAM. More is always better if they are of the same type. These descriptions leave out the speed. What is the FSB (front side bus) of the processors that relate to the RAM? Higher FSB = better too.

Like I say, if the cpu is the same, then the rame *should* be the same. So go for 512.

Ram use to come in my memory as sdr (single sided ram) which is naturally one side of the memory stick and ddr is (double density ram) which is both sides of the memory stick. The 512Mb and the 256Mb is the amount of memory in Mega bytes that you have or wish to purchase. Naturally the higher the ram the more memory and the smoother running of application that will appear to speed up your request for a page when you click your mouse. These days you are able to put up to 3Gb or 4 Giga-bytes in your computer provided it can handles such an upgrade. Memory sticks are easy to install if care is taken not to cause any static internally to the computers hardware. If you have two slots get two 512Mb's to make 1Giga-byte of memory and you will truly notice a significant difference, that is if you laptop can handle it!

ddr means double data retrieval (twice as fast opening folders/windows etc)

the 512mb ram is the same as 256 ddr 2 ram I would guess, so no difference really.

512 mb ram is faster than 256 mb ram. It depends on your needs. If you need to work on more programs at, then go for a higher ram. I'll recommend 1gb ram

One has 512MB memory, and the other has 256MB memory. The 512MB doesnt have a double data retrieval. Like the one I have says "512MB DDR SDRAM"

Mostly speed and ease of use. The 512, in theory is better. I would buy the one with the biggest processor (at least 1.0) and upgrade the RAM.

What u need in a PC is performance then u might choose RAM.
When RAM doubles performance also...
