Try the Mormon church - can't remember the URL. Just type in Latter Day Saints/Genealogy and hit "Search" and the site will come up.....along with about 10,000 others. There's no charge with the Mormons. They have records going back to the beginning of this country. All you'll need will be the names, birthplace and if possible, date, of your most distant ancestor. It'll probably take a while if your ancestor's names were common ones. They also have hints on their website to help you out.

try to do it without spending anything, Google maybe, Libraries have the disks, the Mormons have a lot of info too. I would suggest just starting with what you have, write in the names and dates, ask older family members what they know. Listen to and documenet their stories. Then piece together the puzzles and find more ancestors. Its fun however you do it. Sometimes State archives have wills to look at. Very cool.

I have been trying to do this for a year. A few good places to look free first.
www.familysearch.com
www.rootsweb.com
www.bmd.com
Then I paid 9.99 to join genesreunited.co.uk and it brought in many avenues and still is. As yet this is all I've paid and I have back to 1700's on two lines in 9 months!
Good Luck!

For people with English ancestry, the two best sources are the Family Records Centre
http://www.familyrecords.gov.uk/frc/
which holds birth, marriage and death certificates
and the National Archive
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/census/
which holds census information.
They do make small charges for supplying copies of documents but most of the searches are free.

www.ancestry.com is the cheapest and easiest place to start after gathering all the info you can from your relatives.
There are many specialty sites for regions and ethnicities which can be invaluable after you have a basic tree in place.

You might want to check out genealogy.com. I think there is a trial period, but after that I don't know how much it costs.
