We heard our baby's heart beating for the 1st time on Friday. I know it's an old wive's tale but even the nurse confirmed that baby girls have a much faster heart rate than boys and our baby's was 163 beats per minute which she said was high. Has anyone had an experience that would further confirm or possibly disprove that our baby is a female? Please serious answers ONLY and save the sarcasm! Thanks

While that is a common occurrence... it is not a definitive way of determining the sex of a fetus. All fetuses start out very fast then gradually slow down to what will be their average FHR, but that doesn't occur until towards the end of the second trimester. So you can't go by what is heard at 12 wks? The average FHR is between 120 - 160 at term. Hopes this helps!

I hate to tell you that it is just an old wives tale. My last to children were both boys and their heartrates were in the 150's and up all the time. Even during labor. It all depends on the baby and the mother. Good luck and enjoy that new baby. :)

I have read that the heart beat thing is only true while in labor. So, if you aren't finding out you can watch the fetal heart monitor during labor. Although, based on this, I was suprised to have a girl with my first (we didn't find out) cuz the rate was lower, in the boy range. But her cord was around her neck. So, it is hard to say.

You cannot tell by the heart rate. the baby could have been moving around, and that would elevate its heart rate, just as exercise does yours. I have two girls, and their heart rates varied through out both pregnancies.
I hope this helps.
How far along are you? You should be able to find out the sex soon. Good Luck!

My fiance's sister is a midwife & she said that she can tell the baby's sex with a fetal heart moniter but that its no where near as accurate as seeing it on an ultrasund scan, i would wait until you have your scan and ask the sonographer if you want to know!

Good Luck XxX

Be patient and wait 'til you're in 20-22 weeks for the ultrasound. That has a better chance of confirm. Congratualation and good luck. :)

I had a boy and his heartrate was 135-145...but unless you are getting consistant reading...its hard to tell at the beginning becasue the baby could be moving around.

I know that sometimes as babies grow their heart beats can slow down. This is not a reliable source.
