Yes! You can get breast cancer even if no one else in your family had it before you. Every woman should learn to, and give herself, a monthly breast exam. Women over the age of 40 should have a mammograph done every year.

Here's a link for self examination:

The simple answer is YES you may still get it. However, IF you have a genetic marker indicating that you have the breast cancer gene(like Rosie O'Donnell and Pattie Labelle) it is much more likely(but still not a certainty) that you will eventually get breast cancer.
IF a primary female relative(mother/sister/grandmother or all of the above) gets breast cancer before 65 you should have a base line mammogram before you are 30 and one yearly after that...the same as the other group mentioned...
IF a primary female gets breaast cancer after 65 it is less likely to be genetic but you should still get a baseline mammogram by 40 and follow ups as recommended. There are other things to consider but this is a good place to start...

Yes, you can still get breast cancer even if it isn't in your family. Simply being female puts you at risk. With a family history of breast cancer, it just puts a person at higher risk than someone who's family history is clear of the disease.
Men aren't exempt from it either, although it's rather rare in men.

ANYONE can get breast cancer, it does not have to run in your family. You are just a greater risk if it does.

You can still get it. Every woman is at risk. Some people develop it because of lifestyle and environment.
