Evaluate how advertisers strategically insert commercials to control attitudes and behaviors to sell their products. For example, toys during kids shows. Network television advertisers use stereotypes, and persuade large groups people at the same time. Television networks are in business to make money, and advertisers pay alot to target viewers based upon assumptions about them.

Here's an example: A commercial for an Equinox (a car) was run during Sex & the City. A young couple is in an auto showroom, and the man is more interested in the car than his wife. A salesman secretly signals to the man that he might interest her in the car if he indicates it would be a good car for a new baby. The man uses the suggested trickery and tells his wife that the car would fit the family she always wanted. This gives the impression if you are a guy and you have this car then you are in control. You know what your wife wants and you know how to use it to your benefit. This gives women watching the commercial the idea that if they have the Equinox, it is somehow a step toward starting a family. This also seems to indicate that it is all right for men to lie and be insensitive to get what they want.

Some quotes: In “The Parable of the Democracy of Goods” Ronald Marchand notes that advertisers try to convince people that a particular product will provide any individual with ultimate satisfaction (151). John E. Calfee notes in “How Advertising Informs to Our Benefit” that “The upshot is advertising’s astonishing ability to communicate a great deal of information in a few words.”(216)
