Hi. In retinal surgery a bubble of xenon is place in the eye to hold the retina in place. They use xenon because it is a larger atom which takes longer to pass through the eye wall and provides retinal support for a longer period of time than, say, nitrogen.

The noble gases are simply that vertical group of elements on the far right of the Periodic Table that exist normally in gas form, and are inert.

What would that have to do with "eye treatment"?

Cirric sounds like he/she knows what he/she is talking about but another possibility is that many lasers use noble gases and some eye surgery uses lasers.

My guess is that M Paley is on the right track. The most common LASERs are based on helium and/or argon.
