Once upon a time Macs used to use better hardware than PC's, making them more powerful computers in general (for example, SCSI hard drives and 68k/PPC processors).
Today they are the same machines, built using the same technology. There is so little difference that nowadays you can put Windows XP on a Mac, and you can put Mac OS on a PC.
The #1 difference between Mac and "PC" (ie Windows), is that they use two different operating systems. That means that the computers are programmed to behave differently, and that means that you have to learn how to use each one separately. Also, different software is available for each.
Mac OS is boasted as easy to use, but is actually not any easier than Windows. What is true about MacOS, however, is that it is less susceptible to viruses (because of tighter security) and other types of system failure. Also, it is much more difficult for a user to accidentally mess up the system, which means that Macs are generally more dependable and safer to use.
Lots of people like Windows better because it is what they are used to, and there are more computer games for Windows than Mac. Also, Mac has a relatively poor reputation still because older versions of their operating system really sucked (the new ones are quite nice, though).

Macs tend to be more the "everyday person" computer, or geared for technologically artistic people, as they're easy to navigate through, and are compatible with tons of high quality video editing programs, graphic design programs, etc. Macs are sort of taking over in that sense, as most movie editors in particular are swearing by them, especially with programs like Final Cut. Traditionally PCs are for the "business person" in all of us, as they seem to be better for data processing, and stuff like that.
Even though they're popular now, there area a lot less Macs in the world than PCs, as this accounts for many different computer brands. This means major hacking, and problems from outside sources usually aren't much of an issue for Mac users.
Check out www.apple.com/getamac to watch fun commercials that seem to sum it up quite nicely(with a bit of a bias though).
Cheers.

I am a lifetime pc user who is about to change over to the mac.
The reason being that it is more of an open source type of program so more people can create good add-ons to make your experience better.

Many say macs are better for photography, but after using both in college for such things, I don't agree. Windows is much more customizable and easier for the compute illiterate to use. As for more around better? I prefer Windows after using many different systems.

They are completly two different types of computers, neither are better, it all depends on what you need to do with it. I perfer windows over mac simply because I am more used to how it is run, and mac is less customizable.

I don't think so. It's all about personal preference. Buy and use what you like most and what will do the job for you.
