Many small business employers have it set up to force individuals to quit so that they don't have to pay for unemployment to save money - how do I get around this kind of game so that I end up on top?

Depends on the state. If you are wrongfully fired and can prove it (unemployment will do a fact finding interview as to why you feel you were fired and your employers reasoning, they may lie though), you might still get benefits. This happened to my father, his boss had this power trip and fired my father "just because he could". My father was able to get benefits. If a company is pushing employees to quit and you do, you might also still be able to get benefits if you are able to convince unemployment that the work environment was "unhealthy" (harassment, poor working conditions that management refused to correct, etc).

It may not hurt your chances of getting a job. Moving job to job and having gaps between employment is so common now that it isn't frowned upon as much as it used to be in the past. Also depends on the employer.

Unemployment is created to protect people who become unemployed Thu no fault of their own. Business closing, down sizing ,or owner retires and sells out. If you get fired for a legitimate reason then you have no claim to unemployment. If you don't like your job go and apply for others on your day off. Tell your present employer that you are seeking other employment and ask them to give a favorable reference if possible(due to certain laws now in place in some states it is not lawful to disclose any info except date hired and last day at work)

The only way to end up on top is by being the best that you can be.
Gain knowledge through experience, be a conscientious employee and seek work where you knowledge is appreciated.
Knowledge is power, power generates results.
The term " I CAN" is the most powerful two words in the world.

If you get fired (terminated with cause), you do not get (and do not deserve) unemployment. Only if you are laid off.
