"Imp." I think you mean "important"? Personally I think you should go to Japan at least once if you want to claim being a good Japanese translator. However technically you don't have to go to Japan to be able to translate or be a good translator.

If you are not going to Japan, you can improve/maintain your language skills by being involved with the local Japanese community and/or find friends in Japan to converse with and keep up to date with the language. You could also be a homestay host to Japanese students and network your way there.

New words and slangs pop up within the Japan young generations and if you translate materials that may use the current social language, such as books, scripts (eg. video subtitles), etc. you have to keep up with the change. However, if your translation work is limited to legal documents, then you certainly don't have to do this.

Well.....I don't think anybody who wishes to become a good translator must visit that country of language-origin. I am also an english translator; but I never have been to England. I discovered various angles of this lovely english by constant reading. I do know there are few japanese literature at your hand comparing to the vast treasure of english; but still I think it is may not that much important to go to Japan. However, if you have that much sources easily available for you to visit that lovely land in asia, do make it in reality.....not for the sake of translation but to see a real wonderland on planet earth.

Without total immersion in a language it is very hard to really get the language. The best immersion is being there where Japanese is 24/7.
