Well, if you start in 10th at the start of the chase, you still have a shot at winning the championship. The points system is reset from 1-10 and all under 400 of the leader to 5 point intrevals. For example, Jimmie Johnson was leading but now after 3 races, he's in 7th. Besides, 11th gets a million dollar bonus at the end of the year.

Look at the Bush series, Kevin Harvick has a lead that has pretty well clenched that title for him. He could probably sit out several races and still win the Busch championship. That is why the Chase was started in the Cup series. This way drivers don't get so far ahead halfway through the season, that nobody else has a chance to catch them. That is how it used to be. When Tony Stewart got his first championship, he had it won like three or four races prior to the end of the season. This just adds to the competition, otherwise there is no competioton at the end. The last several years, since they started the Chase, the last race has been highly contested.
I have mixed feelings about it all. I kind of likr the concept and idea behind it, but at the same time, I think that there needs to be somekind of award for leading the entire season. The thing that really makes me crazy is when you have guys who have not won a race the entire season take the cup, and then the driver who has one the most has to fight his way into the chase. I really would like to see NASCAR give the winners more points. Maybe the chase should be based on number of wins, then use points as tiebreakers.

When Matt Kenseth was leading the championship by a bunch (I forget the numbers), NASCAR felt that interest waned because the championship had already been decided. So Brian Z. initiated this change to create more season-end interest and hopefully, get high-paying sponsors more airtime (and NASCAR more money). TV has a lot to do with it--as you are aware, 2/3 of the drivers in the field get little coverage unless they 1) win, 2) wreck, 3) fail to make the chase, 4) wreck one of the chasers, etc.
Sponsors don't like paying millions of dollars for advertising, team and race sponsorships when they don't feel they are getting an appropriate return. So it's pretty much about the money (on all sides).

The chase was dreamed up to make more money for the NASCAR powers. They still have to change it so certain "whinners" get into it.
There was nothing wrong with the old system. It just needed a little polish.

It is intended to make it more exciting for the fans. In years past, there would be three, maybe 4 drivers at this stage of the season that were still mathematically still in the hunt. With this new format, all 10 drivers as of now are still mathematically in it.

Its good when there is a race in the points but it does not make a difference when somebody is running away with the points lead.
