It is totally ok to wash your down comforter. As many have said down comes from birds who live near and in the water. Proper drying is important. Do you have a duvet cover? This cover basically protects your down comforter and is much easier to wash than the comforter. Beware of the dry cleaning praise. Besides costing quite a bit, my dry cleaner charges $100 for a twin/full size!!!- Dry cleaning uses chemicals, and something like a comforter might absorb and not release all of the chemicals until you are sleeping with it. YUCK!!! Check out a duvet cover if you don't have one.

I wash mine on the gentle cycle. Then here's the trick to drying: Set the heat to low and put a tennis ball in the dryer with your comforter. The tennis ball keeps the down from clumping in the corners and your comforter will come out fluffy and even.

I've washed down-filled comforter in washing several times and, no, it's not fallen apart on me. Dry cleaning it now and then probably wouldn't hurt though.

The reasoning behind dry cleaning it is that all the down doesnt get soaking wet. If you do not get it completely dry all the way through, it can begin to smell musty. As long as its completely dry, it wont hurt it. After all...the birds it comes from get wet and dont fall apart.=P

No, you just need to make sure it is dried properly - if you put a shoe or similar in the dryer, it will help the down from clumping up and staying damp.

Washing your cloths is OK; washing your vessels is wrong.
