A relay is very simple. Here is how they work. When a an iron rod is rapped with a coil and electricity is run through that coil the rod will get pulled to the center. People figured out that if you spring load the rod to one end and pull it to the center with current you can make a type of switch.

So a relay is just an electric switch. They are often used so that a person can switch a very small switch to move very large amounts of power. The small switch controls a very large relay. There are many other uses too though.

It is not likely that these small to large applications will be replaced by solid states.

A transistor does the same thing as a relay. There are billions of them in your computer.

A relay is an electrically operated switch. Current flowing through the coil of the relay creates a magnetic field which attracts a lever and changes the switch contacts. The coil current can be on or off so relays have two switch positions and they are double throw (changeover) switches.
The relay’s switch connections are usually labeled COM(POLE), NC and NO:

COM/POLE= Common, NC and NO always connect to this, it is the moving part of the switch.

NC = Normally Closed, COM/POLE is connected to this when the relay coil is not magnetized.

NO = Normally Open, COM/POLE is connected to this when the relay coil is MAGNETIZED and vice versa.
There are 5 Pins in a relay. Two pins A and B are two ends of a coil that are kept inside the relay. The coil is wound on a small rod that gets magnetized whenever current passes through it.

COM/POLE is always connected to NC pin. As current is passed through the coil A, B, the pole gets connected to NO pin of the relay.

i have a Mr. Coffee.

There is a relay that turns on the heating element when i press the "on" button.

the relay can also be turned on by the clock.

The reason a relay is used, the clock uses very small voltages of DC, not enough energy to heat the water can be output by the clock, but it can send enough energy to the COIL of the relay to magnetize it an pull in the CONTACTS, which are big enough to pass the 120 volts with enough current to boil water.

In many applications, mechanical relays are being replaced by solid state electronic switches, but relays offer good electrical isolation and large current capacities at a low price, so they will probably continue to be used.

a relay is to use a small amount of power in the electromagnet -- coming, say, from a small dashboard switch or a low-power electronic circuit -- to move an armature that is able to switch a much larger amount of power.

They can be used as a kind of safety switch to allow a circuit with a small current through to switch on a circuit that will hve a larger current flowing through it.
