I've been in healthcare for 24 yrs, and the docs at our clinic always say the same thing. Treat the cause, and the symptoms. If you are hoarse from yelling at a football game, rest your voice. If you have a river of sticky post nasal drainage running down the back of your throat (often you won't know this until you look in the mirror at your throat with a flashlight), you need an antihistamine to dry it up, which you can get over the counter, or call your doc. Also get some saline nasal spray and rinse your nose frequently to diminish the amount of allergens you are breathing in that you react to. If you are running a fever, be sure to seek med. care. To get some pain relief, you can always take an over the counter pain reliever, such as tylenol, ibuprofen, or aspirin. To help your voice, try the age old remedy of gargling with warm salt water several times daily. Drink lots of warm liquids - herbal teas, soup, etc. Believe it or not, chicken soup has proven to actually help by thinning and breaking up congestion. It also is a good idea to increase your vitamin c intake, and a good multivitamin daily is a good idea anyway. Flu season is coming, and you will want your immunity strong. It isn't if you have this problem this early in the season. Good luck - hope you feel better soon.

Depends on why you have it and for how long. If it just appeared and is sore then you should be able to get medication from the chemist. If is is hoarse with no soreness, then you may have strained your vocal chords and needs rest. If it has got worse over a period of time you should visit your GP.

You could try gargling with salt water or soluble aspirin.

Give your jaws a rest, join the growing SILENCE movement, or at least learn to appreciate some aspects of Buddhism.

Ever hear the BASSO PROFONDO vibratoes of orange clad monks ? Can't get a lower pitch than that, and it's done by resting the vocal chords.

But if you're a sales clerk you're up the creek, I admit.

Honey's unique composition makes it an effective antimicrobial agent, useful for treating minor burns and scrapes, and for aiding the treatment of sore throats and other bacterial infections.

I just found this, maybe thats your answer?
