Agreed, neither Morrison nor Reddick are even remotely close to the all-time talent that Bird was. The thing that distinguishes Larry from these guys aside from his all-around skills in rebounding, passing etc. was his GAME. Larry like Michael and Magic and Dr J, made smart decisions on the court. He'd be thinking two steps ahead of his defenders, working to make the plays that would win the game, whether that meant nailing the open 3 or feeding a team-mate he knew would be open.
It's no secret- the media is just clamoring for another truly spectacular American white player and currently there aren't any. Steve Nash is Canadian, Manu Ginobili is Argentinean. They want a caucasian All-American Mark McGwire type of player that will have the approval of white parents living in the suburbs, someone they don't mind their kids saying "I wanna be like him" ...
Keith Van Horn never really developed into that caliber of player, he was the closest thing to a prospect in recent years.
But to be fair, it's not just Larry who suffers from this. Every new young black superstar is touted as the next Michael, whether it's Vince Carter, or Kobe or LeBron. But they stretch it much further with comparisons to Bird, to the point that we see NBA role-players like Reddick/Morrison (not even genuine stars) being propped up.

Larry Bird has the jump shot thats instructed how everyone should shoot. His shot was perfect with both hands and that Redick, Morrison and Dirk can shoot is why they are compared to him. I do agree none of these players are no where close and shouldnt be in the same sentence with Larry but since they have good shooting ability they are compared to the Legend. And there is no telling if they can ever get to that level. It will be a task very hard to conquer but IMPOSSIBLE IS NOTHING.

Bird was one of the more complete players in NBA lore. You'd be hard pressed to find someone who could do it all like he could. Bird may have been white, but he had Lebron James like skills.
MJ called Larry Bird the greatest opponent he ever played. That says something.
If I could have an ALL NBA team, Jordan and Bird would definately be on it. (Jordan is obviously a no brainer.)
But, just like in all sports, comparisons are made to relate them to the fans. Kobe Bryant and MJ really play nothing alike, but people are always comparing the two. Same with Lebron James. They are really their own unique players.
Although, Larry Bird's shooting form had nothing on Jeff Hornacek's. Ray Allen has amazing form as well, I wonder why no one ever compares people to Ray Allen?

how are they not close to it. when larry got out of school he was a garbage man..
these guys scored more points a game in college then Larry did. so that means they are close to it. now all they have to do it prove it in the NBA. Larry was a great passer.

Because the NBA is desperately looking for that one "white superstar" to appeal to the white fan base, like Bird did.
Larry Bird was a unique player, who came along at the right time. There will never be another like him.

It is actually nice to see that there are some intelligent people out there answering questions. They also know their subject well. I will have to go with two of them, C-Man and Adam C.,they seem to be on target. Smitty is usually on the ball also, but I have to disagree with his Jerry West. Just my opinion on that.

I don't know why, probably because it's the politically correct comparison. But I don't think that's right. It's like Steve Nash, who does he remind you of?? I can't think of any white players besides Pistol Pete, but to me his style is more Magic or Isaiah Thomas than anybody else.
