a) could be anywhere from you leaving the hospital the same day to 2 or 3 days... more if there are complications
b) about anywhere from 3 days to a week depending on if there were/are complications

By normal, I am assuming that you mean vaginal....For an uncomplicated vaginal deliver, in which the mother and child are, and have been for the duration of the pregnancy, healthy, it is possible to be released from the hospital after only 24 hours. However, there are pros and cons for this. You can get more rest in the hospital, sometimes, because there are people to help you care for the baby while you recover (A woman's recovery from pregnancy is not a matter of days, but weeks). However, if you are squeamish in hospitals, have plenty of help, and are better able to rest in familiar surroundings, it may be best for you to be in your own home.

Sometimes, however, even during vaginal deliveries, there are complications, to mother, child, or both. If the complications are for the baby alone, and the mother still remains healthy throughout the pregnancy/labor/delivery process, she may still be released in 24 hours, with the child remaining in the hospital. If the complications arising result in danger or injury to the mother, a longer hospital stay may be necessary for the mom. Sometimes, due to certain conditions, babies are even released to another responsible party (i.e. the father, aunt, uncle, grandparent), while the mother remains hospitalized to recover further.

Many hospitals, however, have a manditory 48 hour release policy. Even if mother and child are both healthy, they are held in the hospital for 48 hours to be sure that no complications arise at a later time. This may also depend on the obstetrician (mommy's doctor) and the pediatrician (baby's doctor), as well as the insurance coverage that you have.

Now, for a cesarean, the normal hospital stay for mother and child is usually around 72 hours, or 3 days. Again, if complications arise, mother, child, or both may be held longer in the hospital.

It is important after a vaginal or cesarean delivery to always follow your doctor's instructions, not leave the hospital before you are released, and recieve appropriate follow up care (i.e. the baby's one week/one month/two month check ups, and mom's 6 week checkup). It is also important to have plenty of help, as much as possible, at home or nearby.

On the other hand, you can sign yourself, and/or your child, out of the hospital AMA (Against Medical Advice) as soon after delivery as you want. The hospital reserves the right to obtain a court order to keep the child in the hospital if they feel you are endangering your baby by taking it home too soon. Also, you can remain IN most hospitals AMA as well, just be aware that your insurance probably won't cover the additional charges, and you will be responsible for reimbursing the hospital for all cost during your additional stay.

It depends on many things. The condition of mother and child, hospital policy, the doctors opinion and the insurance company.

For a vaginal delivery with no complications it would normaly be between one and three days.

For a C-section with no complications it would most likly be between three and five days.

For a VBAC (vaginal birth after delivery) with no complications it would most likly be between three and six days.

Depending on any complications or irregularities that may arrise, your doctor/ hospital staff may decide to keep you longer.

If the baby has major problems but the mother is fine then the mother may be discharged earlier than the baby. This does not mean that you cannot stay with the baby anyway, but for insurance purposes you will not be given a room and a bed for that time, though they have cots for you if you chose to stay with the baby.

A normal delivery is 2 days. A c-section is 3 days. This is if there are no complications.

For my first two I had them on sat and was out on sunday. my last two it was sat and out on mon. It depends on your insuarnce co and the dr and you. You can ask to stay longer if they want to send you home after only one day or leave early. Don't be afraid to ask.
