our teacher in India used to do this, get some detol and dip you finger tips in them and reapply ever time u wash you hands...its not pleasant and you will get out of the habit. the best thing to use is bitrex, a not toxic extremely bitter product that is added to chemicals to stop children drinking them.
I have also heard, but i don't know how effective this is, that if you put a rubber band round your wrist and ping in sharply on the underside of your wrist every time you catch yourself chewing your nails, you will associate this with pain and your body will learn not to do it. basically aversion therapy.

I went through the same thing. When I was little, I LOVED red nail polish but my mom said I could only paint them if I stopped biting and let them grow. That's how my mom got me to stop when I was little. Now I do it as kind of a nervous tic. I have to make an effort to not do it. That is the only way my nails will grow. When ever I have the urge, I get my hands busy with something. Or sometimes I'll put my hands in my pockets. It'll take some time, but just keep it up.

Try stopping in stages. Start with telling yourself that you WILL NOT bite the nail on one finger, try a pinky. Wrap the tip of this finger in a bandaid, or tape, so that you can not physically get to it. Then try two fingers (both pinkys). It may take up to a week or two to convince yourself that those fingers are off limits. Then add another finger to the off-limits list and work your way from there until you have quit!

Try to reward yourself for good habits, instead of punishing for bad. Try buying a new color of fingernail polish for every nail you completely quit biting and get a manicure when you've made it to all ten! Or find a reward-system that works well for you!

Make sure the people that you are around most often know that you are trying to quit. If you are biting your nails without realizing and they notice, they can help by reminding you to stop!

Also, rubbing vitamin-E oil on your cuticles will help them heal, and help your nails grow stronger and faster.

Good Luck!

Have you tried using the product in the child care section of most super markets that is designed to stop children from sucking their thumbs? It's very bitter but not harmful to you. Do you have a ring that you wear daily? If you do...move it to a new finger on the same day that you apply the bitter product. It will feel differently on your fingers and will mentally pull attention to itself from your nails. When you feel the urge to chew.....twist the ring instead. Now, you need to change the oral fixation of this behavior as well. You can try gum if you like. I find that a sucking sensation is better, though. Keep sugar free mints with you and when you have that bitter taste in your mouth, the mint will off set the taste and give your mouth motion as well. You have to work at changing behavior like this. It won't be easy, but you can do it. The suggestions about the acrylic nails is good, but they damage the nail bed and leave them very thin and weak and can be expensive. Good luck......

try acrylic nails. They are pretty hard to chew your way through. the difference in thickness will also make you more aware of when you are attempting to chew them, so assist in helping to break the habit. I was a nail tech for years. This helped some people stop nail biting.

Put a rubber band around your wrist every time you want to bite your nails snap the rubber band against the inside of your wrist. It hurts. Eventually you will associate biting your nails with pain and the urge will dissipate

Try soaking your nails in tobasco sauce (or some other edible but nasty tasting substance you can't stand.) Also at the same time chew gum to give your mouth something to do.

It will take several weeks to stop this habit and change it something else (gum chewing.)

Hey use something making very bad smell, while you are at home. So that you don’t like to even raise your hand. I have tried this, 5 years before, succeeded and stopped my nails biting for ever.

Try to chew some gum when you feel the need to bite your nails, you have a strong oral fixation, that's all nothing to worry about.
