Disc defragmentation condenses the information on your hard-drive to the most space saving configuration. It's kind of like cleaning your closet and folding everything tightly so that it fits back into the space better. It does not remove anything from your computer, and you will not be able to tell that things have moved when using your computer. It simply frees up big 'blocks' of hard-drive space so that the computer can run faster.

It is best to run a defragmentation multiple times in a row. Two or three at the least, more if you have not run a defrag in more than a year.

When an application or file is saved to the hard drive, the operating system tries to keep everything in the same location (or cluster) Over the course of time files will be deleted, leaving blank areas between files. If you install another large program, the hard drive tries to fill the holes, thus breaking up the program into "pieces" all over the hard drive. This effects your system performance by as much as 200% since programs have to access more areas of the hard drive, just to run. Defragmentation is the process of restoring the "pieces" into some kind of order so the information can by accessed more quickly and efficiently.
Running a "Defrag" program will help to keep your system running well and save wear and tear on the hard drive.

Windows XP has a built-in defrag program under "system tools" which is in the "accessories" section off the "all programs"

You can also buy a defrag program such as PerfectDisk or Diskeeper

A disk defragmenter is a computer program designed to increase access speed (and sometimes increase the amount of usable space) by rearranging files stored on a disk to occupy contiguous storage locations. Disk defragmenters are available for many platforms, the most common being those included with operating systems (i.e. Microsoft Windows), utility packages (like Norton Utilities), or other standalone defragmenters (like PerfectDisk or Diskeeper). Many offer advanced options, such as sorting by last access or modification date to decrease access time for most commonly accessed files.

As you add and delete files, new files are split to fit into the spaces left. Defragmentation puts all files together making the system run faster.

every time you put something into your computer it is stored in your hard disk and this may not be in order i.e. they are placed in the order written and not according to related files(files belonging to the same program)so the files for a particular program will be all over the hard disk(fragmented); requiring the computer to search all over the hard disk for it and as fast as a computer maybe it will take some time for the computer to find.

disk defragmentation basically takes all the information in the hard disk and rearranges in with all the related files together so that it is easer for the computer to find the information, allowing the system to run faster.hope that this will help.

God bless,gabe

Disc degrag, the best way to put it is liek this.: . Picture your room , full of books and stuff, all trown in in no order. Your room being the hard drive, disk defrag will take the books and put them where they belong, for easier access, the clothes in the closet, the condoms in the drawer, you get the picture.... that way when u running late u find everything fast.... by doing the disk defrag, u get ur ram (ursef) to work faster and find things faster, hence , making ur comp a little more efficient :) , I hope its clear, . Think of it like a library.

Your computer takes out info (books) and reads them on the tables.

Defragmenting puts the books back where they go so it's much fatser to find them again later.
