I don't actually ever remember seeing my chickens walk backwards. But if they are scared by something I think they could back up. But I don't think they would just go around walking backwards for no reason.They tend to jump, hop , fly not very high(unless one side of their wings are clipped).I think I may have seen them jump back before. I never actually saw them walk backwards.

I worked in a commercial Growers chicken houses for over 4 years and I never saw a chicken walk backwards. we raised then from hours old till they reached 2.5 to 3 lbs.

i'm distinctly confident large fish communicate with little fish of their fishy language, yet i have not in any respect considered a hen walk backwards. i recognize sharks can't swim backwards, yet it truly is off the purpose

Yes they can, but not for long..they fall over.
