There are 538 total electoral votes (equivalent to one for each Senator or Representative, plus 3 for the District of Columbia). A simple majority is required to win, so the winner would need 270.

Only the electoral vote counts. There have been several cases where a candidate won the poular vote but failed to get a majority of eletoral votes. Search electoral college on wikipedia.
