Well you no as an art student myself. i thinks shes not, she looks like a rite mardy cow bag.

She was initially all smiles. You should have seen her while her picture was being painted. She got tired though because of the long time that has been taking Leonardo da Vinci to complete the painting and so the smile began to diminish. Notice her face... she's kinda tired. But somehow, the thought of being painted by da Vinci must've made her maintain that "questionable" smile; otherwise she'd look rather pÃssed off lol.

it is not an usual smile. there are several theories:
1) she's pregnant
2) she's recently given birth to the second of her five children
3) she's recovering from something that emotionally affected her
my favourite is the first, as I remember that I, as well as my other friends,was doing funny faces during pregnancy, usually giving hard time to others while they would try to deciphre the meaning:)

I mean, who knows? Art is subjective anyway. Each individual's way of looking at an art piece is interpreted differently from another.

I think she is!
Her expression looks happy rather than sad to me. Sort of amused in a condescending way.
What is strange is that she has no eyebrows! Maybe that's part of what makes her expression enigmatic?

It's weird because when you look directly at her she doesn't appear to be smiling, but if you look at her from your peripheral she appears to smile.
