I need a laptop for my PhD and I am limited to these brands:
Samsung R55 Core Duo
Samsung P50 Duo2
Samsung R65 Intel Centrino DualCore
Toshiba TecraA8 Core Duo
Toshiba Tecra M5L Core Duo T2400
Toshiba P100 Core Duo T2300E
Reasons and comments would be very helpful.

Toshiba over Samsung any day, it comes down to Japanese vs. Korean. As for the Toshiba, get one with at least a 60Gb HD and as much RAM as you can get into it as possible. After that go for a 12" screen, which is fine for my work and I'm a postdoc researcher. Good luck with the PhD, but that's another story.

None of those are good laptops. You must stay away from using Dell Laptops since research showed that the batteries burn and could explode leading to death. I suggest eMac computers for ACADEMiC WORK and business too. They have good protection. The reason is because in my middle school, we used eMac. They may not SEEM great, but they definitly are.

My husband recently brought me a toshiba core duo. i have found it easy to use and they laptop itself is very nice. I think this one has 60gig.
he brought it from currys under 600 pounds

Get a Dell. Never ever trust samsung or toshiba computers.
