A short, often, uplifting phrase which is usually associated with an organisation and attached to its coat of arms/logo/badge/.

For example, under the Boy Scouts trifeather badge is a small scroll with the words 'Be Prepared' written thereon.

'Be Prepared' is the motto.

If you are an American, then your country's motto is "E PLURIBUS UNUM" under the Presidential Seal - I'm sure you know the meaning!

Hope that helps.
