There are still a few around... They are just more hidden than before, as society tends to look down on you if you say you live or grew up in a commune.

They were not financially viable. There was a spiritual commune in Maryland north of Baltimore and it went belly up financially. Communes just don't work because people are not rewarded for working hard, and they will not work if they see slackers getting just as much if not more rewards than themselves.
