Betting wise, the total is posted by the oddsmakers just the same as the point sprerad is. Earlier repsondents have explained the details. However, as with any point spread bet, the total can change as the week progresses. If it falls exactly on the number, it is a tie and all bets are off.

The over/under of a football game is the total number of points scored by both teams combined. If one team scored 10 points and the other scored 14, then the over/under would be 24 for the game. Then as someone placing a bet on this you'd have to decide if you think the two teams combined scores would be over 24 (as in 25 or more) or under 24 (as in 23 or less).

Over/under line is the total number of points that both teams score in the game. Betting the over means you think the two teams together will score more than that; betting under means you think they will score less.
