I've owned both diesel & gas engined cars. For the most part, diesel engines are more economical than gas engines. It comes from the fact that diesel engines generally spin at a lower rpm at top gear. Diesels also involve less maintenance than a gas engine. No points to change, no spark plugs. Basically, regular oil changes & periodic clearing of a tank which separates water from diesel fuel. Diesels are best on the highways & interstates where the use of low-rpm and tall gearing makes for extremely economical driving.
Now the cons: Cold weather starts can be difficult if inexperienced, and does take a little
bit of warm up time. Acceleration times are slightly slower than gas engines, but this gap closes constantly. Also, these days, diesel fuel is considerately more expensive than in days past.

Generally you will get better gas mileage and/or performance with an engine that runs on diesel. However, as things are right now, diesel is more expensive than gasoline, at least where I am. Also, to a certain lesser importance, diesel has more of a "stink" factor than gasoline, not sure whether it actually burns cleaner than gas or not, probably not.

Diesel fuel in the USA is not low sulfur enough for the really high fuel milage cars from europe. Only a few makes VW most noteably have imported diesels with turbos. Common rail direct injection electronic controled right now are Mercedes sprinter dodge van cummings dodge truck engine and isuzu chevy truck engine Ford International navistar engine . But soon we should see low sulfur and get more better running diesel cars. Right now stick to gas hybrid 65 mpg or great new Nissan Versa and Toyota Yarus and Honda fit.

I've been looking into this some myself, and I have decided that the next vehicle I purchase will likely be diesel. The price fluctuates somewhat, as does regular gasoline, but you can use biodiesel, too. And I think diesel is cleaner to burn.

Is harder to find fuel. You have to find a mechanic or take it to dealer. It smells. For tax and oil co ripoffs it cost more for fuel. It makes more noise... Plus side is better mileage. Use bio if you want.... Id say a truck diesel is OK but a car i would wait a few years. Get a hybrid if u can afford it or a nice Honda or Toyota.

Then throw a tremendous motor in it, round 460ci or better (it really is a 7.5 litre) then, get rid of the smog canisters, installation a 4 barrell extreme move carb, decrease off the muffler, and strait pipe it. stress round with it extremely wealthy on low high quality gas, you'd be accomplishing an same as in case you acquire a hybird. or you may want to easily persist together with your present day high quality, american automobile (with any luck) and steer sparkling of all this worry. in case you do not belive me google seek for..."hybrids are auctually undesirable for the surroundings"
