Males tend to be more colorful and have longer fins. If you bought him in a little cup in the pet store, chances are he is male. Pet stores usually group house the females. Here are some pictures of males and females http://watershed3.tripod.com/types.html .

The female can be as colorful as males, but will tend to have lighter colors. The ugly colorless females you see in stores are often rejected breeding stock. I've current got a beatifull red female, a solid blue, and 2 more with a mix of red and blue. I used to have a beatifull pure white alpha female as well.
The real way to tell sex is if you can see the egg spot, but with store bought finage is a lot easier. Males will have long trailing fins, while female have much shorter fins.
PS- Note that males can't be kept with females, and males are pretty much loners. (In larger than 5 gallon tank s they can have peaceful non betta tnk mates.) Females are aggressive to a lesser degree, and need lots of space/hiding places if kept together. Unless the females were raised together, and you bought them as a set. You can only keep about 1 per 5-10 gallons. Even then they will fight initially, if you add another betta, or if they see male betta. Unlike the males they almost never agressive to other fish.

If your betta has long flowing fins, its a male. The female doesn't have this. Its not technically just about the color, but the female Betta doesn't have "pretty" fins. It looks like a Betta w/out the flowing fins. It is usually really pale in color, compared to a male Betta. Its not whether its red or blue though. My guess is that you have a male. Most people are not interested in the ugly female.

Color doesn't have anything to do with it, all the females I had were very colorful. Even though there are many different tail types males will have the longer fins and females have the shorter fins. Also most petstores sell the males in those tiny little cups and keep the females in tanks.

Most of the males are the brightest colours. The male also has the big showy fins and tail where the female is less ornate.

If the fins are long, it's a male, if the fins are short, it is a female.
the females used for commercial breeders are colored just as nice as the males.

if it has short fins, its a female and its quite pale and not that great and the male is just the opposite. you've probably got a male.
