generally, you can divide your cell into 3 major parts, the plasma membrane (that is, the outer most layer of the cell and serves to separate the cell from its external environment), the nucleus (where your DNA or genetic material is housed), and your cytoplasm (everything within the cell that is not nucleus or organelle).
The cytoplasm houses many organelles and other cellular components necessary for the cell to function. probably one of the most important functions of the cytoplasm would be in the cytoskeleton of the cell. the cytoplasm serves as a substrate for cytoskeleton which gives the cell its structure and motility among others. also, the cytoplasm serves as a media where amino acids etc... are suspended.

cytoplasm is the jellylike material found in plant AND animal cells that acts as a transport system inside the cell and prevents it from collapsing. also, it holds vacuoles in place inside the cell
