I live in Illinois and have tried to get on an local volunteer Auxiliary Police Department. However, the Chief of the local police department denied my application. I was told that my application was accepted by the Sheriff and by the Auxiliary, but denied by the Chief. I wanted to meet with the chief and he wouldn't see me and sent his LT. His LT told me that the reason I was not accepted was because they were told by a Crime Stoppers tip that I have underage drinking taking place at my residence. This is completely false. There was never any contact made with me by an officer, nor was there an investigation started. I have asked all my nieghbors if the police has contacted them. My nieghbors all say no. I am looking forward to a career in law enforcement and this hearsay is detrimental to my future. I belive that by him using unvarifiable information would consider it to be Defamation. Any thoughts?

Is there another law that prohibits Law Enforcement from holding unvarifable inormation against persons? --- Something to do with McCarthyism I was told.

Unless someone goes around in public making false accusations against you, it's not defamation of character. I would ask the police to let me see records of reports made against you or if any charges are pending concerning your name and address on what the chief has. Someone may have called in a tip to Crimestoppers that is false, but that person who called will usually remains anonymous. If you find out who that person is, you could try to sue them.

That answer was BS. It was a quick dismissal of you. Best for you would be to apply with a different PD. You could possibly sue and win, but you don't want enemies in the PD.

I don't think this qualifies as Defamation unless they made the claim for your denial openly public.

Consult an attorney if you with to persue.

If you don't know being an insider what makes you think we do? lol However, it's so not fair. If I had a local volunteer auxiliary police department, I would totally accept your application. :) Besides why would you want to work side by side with idiots who don't apreciate you. Save yourself the trouble and headaches honey.

I am sure that there is a way to appeal this decision. You do not have a case to sue for defamation though because it is possible they did get this supposed tip on you but there is no way to prove it
