Its' funny, I heard about something like this. A woman had the same problem. Someone told her to make a trail of bread crumbs from the garage to outside. Now the woman had two skunks in her garage. Good luck. We have one under our shed. We just leave it alone. It's the only friend our cat has.

skunks are nocturnal. leave it alone until after dark. leave some food out for it; wet dog food works great in a space close to the stairs but far enough away so that once it begins eating you can put in a temporary barrier to stop it from going back under the stairs. if you can't put a barrier in, try leaving a radio on in there after the animal has left; it likely will not be interested in returning.
best of luck

Leave a trail of dry cat food leading away from the garage and the skunk will eat his way out....the you can block where he went in! I had one in my house once and that's what I did. Both skunk and I were happy! good luck!

aside from animal control you just have to wait it out and keep your fingers crossed, but in case it sprays take a bath in tomato juice, after the little bugger comes out from under the steps (if small steps) i would go to the hardware store and buy some lattice and attach it to the sides of the steps so no more can get in there (aka Seal it up)

Send in something worse smelling like moth balls. Or sounds mean but they will withdraw and not taste it. When they are on the prowl at night surround area with Hot sauce. They won't break that boundry. I put it in my house plants too or black pepper to repel my cats. They won't go within three feet of it.

Call your local Animal Control. They can usually set up a humane trap.

It will eventually leave to look for food. When it does, close off your steps.
