Most factories that have actually flame chimneys (as opposed to smoke or steam chimneys) produce some gas that is harmful to the environment as a byproduct of their production. Rather than releasing the gases into the air, they burn them off in flare stacks. Plastic plants, chemical plants, and oil refineries all typically have flare stacks on their premises.
