i have recently started an access to nursing course at college. it is full time. my partner gave up work to look after the kids and is now claiming job seekers allowance for us. i get tax credits but have been told i am not entitled to anything from college. i have 4 kids and my eldest has learning difficulties so we would prefer one of us to look after them instead of a childminder as they would need to be split up because of ages etc. am i entitled to any help from anywhere do you know? and before anybody says it,me and my man have always worked to provide for our kids.this is something i have always wanted to do and will benefit in the long run,we are just struggling at the moment.x

It sounds like now is just not the right time for you to go back to college.

No, college will not give you any money. You are paying THEM to go to college, so why should they pay you anything because you have four kids?

I would suggest your partner going back to work and hiring a nanny. OR you need to realize that although it's noble of you to go back to college, now just may not be the time for you to go back. How old are you kids anyway? "Learning disabilities" can range from dyslexia to downs syndrome. You cannot protect them forever.

There are single parents all over the world who go to college while supporting kids. If you want it enough, you'll do it. Can you hold one or more part time jobs to support your family and your career? Focusing on your studies are important, but so is caring fro your family.

Your husband OR you should get at least a part time job. Unemployment isn't going to cover enough, especially if you're in college.

Part time college work is under 12 hours.

Hi Nicola,

Well done on making a very courageous decision.
If you are in the UK go to the student finance advisor in student services and apply for an ACCESS grant.

In saying that I thought the nurses training course was fully funded by the government and you got paid for doing it. I may be wrong but ask the question.

In the UK you can also possibly apply for a dependents grant from your LEA. (Local Education Authority.) You will have to contact them to find out.

I hope this helps.

Best of luck with you studies.

I don't know if that will help but its a good place to start.
Job seekers is based on being available for work so if he gave up work he is unlikely to get it. He needs to claim (or also claim) Job seekers allowance income based (the old income support).

It is a lot easier to get funding before you start courses, some won't give you it if you have already started :-((

There may be money available, but it depends on where you are. In the states, many programs have been cut back, scaled down, or just plain terminated. You could check private agencies, charities, or scholarships set up by professional organizations in the field in which you are interested. Good luck.

the college wont pay any money but there is a way of getting round it. if you are only at college for 16 hours or less it is classed as a part-time course. then you could get a job for the hours you are not at college which still entitles you to get your benefits.

You are not "entittled" to any money - no one is "entittled" to money. However, you might be able to find a scholarship or something. Check under things like your ethnicity and/or religion. There are many scholarships that go unclaimed every year for people of certain ethnic backgrounds.

you and hubby chose to be parents so why not stay at home and do just that till the kids have grown up..
why should my taxes be paid to fund you?
as a single straight white bloke in full time work i am sick of my taxes being spent on benefitting everyone but me!!
