Actually the saying is "it's a long lane that has no turning", and we use it to mean that one always has choices....no decision is truly final and everlasting....... origin is simply common-sense in country living: sooner or later any lane comes to some sort of junction or fork where one can go two ways.

I don't know the origin, but I would guess the meaning to be that in life you must make turns (changes), or the road (journey through life) will surely become very dull and repetitive.
