i live in michigan and can get very cold here in the winter months. let's say to 10 below zero for a week.

Where do you live in Michigan? The Upper Peninsula?
In southern Michigan (where most people live), it rarely gets below zero, and almost never is it 10 below for an entire week.

Depends on your definition of cold. No computer should be subject to temperatures below 50 degrees during operation for long periods. It's fine if it is off. Nothing below 30 degrees if the computer is going to be off. Very cold or very warm temperatures are not good for the components.
