Why is it that some versions of songs are different on two seperate albums, such as New Order's Sub-Culture- the original is rougher and more accoustic, the second version on Substance 1987 is synthed up with more backing vocals.
Similarly, why do you find that video versions of songs are different. I am thinking of In Your Room by Depeche Mode as I ask this. The video version contained in the Videos 86-98 DVD is much slower and guitar based than the album version on Songs of Faith and Devotion.
Why? I can't see why they should be different.

The artist probably wanted a different sound or had new ideas for a particular song or didn't like the original version that they made. Music is always evolving.

With reference to your New Order query the song was first done early post Joy Division but as New Order found its way they become more electronic/synth based so it changed the sound a bit.

I love it when there are different versions about for some songs it used to be worth buying the 12" versions to get the different mixes but most single Cd's nowadays are more like mini EPs.

Also like to add your taste in music is ace!

A lot of record companies like to put a different version of a song out as a single to the album version to try and induce fans to buy both the single and the album (or other formats). Quite often different version appear on greatest hits which if you had all the albums you wouldn't buy.

In most instances it's a cynical marketing ploy

album versions often differ from single versions of songs because they have to be edited to a nice 3-4 minute length to radio airplay. i would imagine its the same for music videos.
