Perhaps you need to desensitize yourself to the idea of singing alone if front of people. Start by trying to sing in front of family or your best friends - they will be your best support system. Have you tried singing in public with a group or even a duet partner? Sometimes there's safety in numbers, and having another body or two for the audience to gawk at will help ease tensions a bit.

You didn't give your age in your post. If you are still in school, try joining your choir. The music teacher would certainly be able to help you ought.

On the other hand, if you are over 21, try heading to the bar for karaoke night. Maybe a few "shots of courage" will help to get you onstage. I've found that hearing that applause the first couple of times really helps minimize the fear of being in front of people.

Practice some favorite music so that you get it right every time, maybe with the use of a a recorder, then sing it for a trusted friend. If you are good, this person will tell you. You need to build confidence in your abilities, and then you have to force yourself to proceed. I am very introverted, but I do a lot of public speaking now. At first, I could not make any sound at all, I completely froze up. My career depended on doing this, though, and I started to volunteer for small speaking engagements, because I knew I had to. What I find now is that if I am very knowledgeable about my subject, in other words, very sure of myself, I am fine. If I venture off my knowledge base, I stumble.
Being as introverted as I naturally am, I have very consciously made efforts to become more outgoing and more at ease with people in general. It takes a long time, but the efforts have paid off for me. I learned how to do this by watching people around me, and imitating their behavior.
Good luck, I would love to hear you sing.

Take a course in public speaking. This will teach you methods to relax and give you experience in being the center of attention in a group of people. I could never sing in front of people either, I learned to play guitar so that I had something to concentrate on while I was singing. Eventually I got enough confidence to face the audience and even to open my eyes and look at them! Good luck, and keep trying. Maybe if you record yourself and played the tapes for friends it would make you feel more comfortable.

Do what I did. Sing in front of people softly and when you hit good notes you will want people to hear it so therefore you'll start to sing louder and before you know it you will be over this fear. IT IS WHAT IT IS. ,... just accept that you are afraid and that will soon change. It is sort of reverse physiology.
cheers

you just keep going on until u get so familiar with the feeling.
it will never go away but the trick is for u to accept u are going to get it & get used to it. trust me.
denying it, laughing, pretending to be someone else doesnt help ;p

if you choose to follow your dream, you should go act on it. if you know you got talent, you should be proud of it. if you won't conquer your fear, you'll end up singing in the bathroom forever. if you know you are talented, then get out of that shell.

you cannot be a singer and share your voice with everyone if you are too afraid to sing to anyone. Go to a Hypnotist.
