Just bought a used, 125 gallon aquarium set-up but i need gravel for the bottom. How much?

Does someone have an estimate on how much in POUNDs? I'm trying to figure out how much i need to buy.

It depends on what kind of fish you plan to have in it. Cichlids like to root around and move gravel (2-3 inches). Dwarf cichlids like sand, it is much easier to move for them (1-1.5 inches). Loaches like sand also, they burrow into it and hide (1-2 inches). You could have both if you wanted. Sand in one end and gravel in the other.

Usually it is about one pound per gallon of water. Or about 2-3 inches deep.

You only need a certain amount if you are going to be using an undergravel filter otherwise its up to you. I personally like my tanks to be mostly barebottom with a few medium sized river rocks. It keeps the tank cleaner since there is no place for the crap to hide.

It depends on how many inches of gravel you want. 1" of gravel will be a completely different amount then if you want 3".

The amount is determined by the type of filter you use.If you have an undergravel fillter then its about 2 inches on top of it...I sugest you run one, it will help.A back on the tank filter is about 3 inches.Hope that helps..

i have 250lbs. in my 135 which is 3" thick!
