Do not eat Shark, Swordfish, King Mackerel, or Tilefish because they contain high levels of mercury. Tuna is also high, particularly albacore tuna and all tuna steaks. Although they say you can have tuna once per week, I am not eating ANY during my pregnancy because it can damage your baby's IQ.

They also recommend mixing up the types of fish and shellfish you eat and not eating the same type of fish and shellfish more than once a week.

Most Tuna and salmon. There are areas in which they are either caught or farmed that contain less mercury. But I can never remember, so I'm just staying away from fish altogether, even though I'm craving it. But before I knew I was pregnancy, tuna salad made my feet swell. I love tuna salad and would practically live off of it. But the feet swelling worried me, then I found out I was pregnant, so I stopped eating it for now.

I read somewhere that mercury has been found to contribute to autism. Whether that research is true or not, don't know. But another good reason to avoid mercury.

I am a big fish eater, and I made the decision when I found out I was pregnant to avoid fish all together. Too many mercury warnings, and even fish that is suppose to be good, still have cautions. I figure I can wait 9 months for fish again, in order to keep myself and my unborn child healthy.

Try to avoid fatty fish. Tuna, Swordfish, etc
The fattier the fish, the more mercury retention.

From what I've heard, most fish. Fresh water fish like trout and so on might be okay but don't eat any fish until you talk with your doctor....the mercury levels in salt water fish can cause problems.

Don't eat:

Raw meat such as sushi, seafood, rare or uncooked beef, or poultry because of the risk of contamination with coliform bacteria, toxoplasmosis, and salmonella.
Raw eggs, or foods containing raw egg such as Caesar dressing, mayonnaise, homemade ice cream or custard, unpasteurized eggnog, or Hollandaise sauce because raw eggs may be contaminated with salmonella.
Soft cheese such as blue cheese, feta, Brie, Camambert, and Latin-American soft white cheeses such as queso blanco and queso fresco because they may harbor harmful bacteria.
Fish containing accumulated levels of mercury in their fatty tissues such as shark, swordfish, king mackerel, tilefish.
When a pregnant woman consumes large amounts of mercury, her baby may suffer brain damage resulting in developmental delays (for example, delays in learning to walk or talk).
Fish containing high levels of an industrial pollutant called polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in their fatty tissues such as bluefish and striped bass, and freshwater fish such as salmon, pike, trout, walleye from contaminated lakes and rivers. According to the March of Dimes, consumption of large amounts of PCBs by pregnant women is linked to decreased attention, memory, and IQ in their babies. Check with your local Health Department to determine which fish in your area are safe to eat.
