There could be a number of reasons.
At the time she didn't know she was a lesbian.
Social and familial pressures to get married and have a 'normal' life.
She wanted to have children. The only way to do that is have sex with a man.
She was in denial.
She developed 'those feelings' later in life.
You can always be honest and ask her.

Well in some it takes a while to develop, in others the dyke is in denial until later and thinks a baby will cure her and of course your Dad could be so crap at sex that after him she wanted gravy curtains
