Wow, pretty open-ended question. The simplest answer is that otherkin are beings other than human that exist in a human body. I know a lot of people qualify that answer by saying 'people that believe' but for me it's not a matter of belief but of fact. I am 'kin, no real way to get around it (and believe me, I tried pretty hard for a while there).

There are lots of different kinds of otherkin, so a large part of this question depends upon what specific kind you're wanting to know about. Everything from vampires to elves to angels to dragons and more. I'm guessing you're asking this question because you or someone you know has reason to believe they might be 'kin. If that's the case, the best thing to do is look inward. It manifests in everyone differently, so most of the time you'll only be able to provide answers that are specific to you.

I know you've probably seen that whole 'as it applies to you' bit before (it certainly drove me around the bend when I was looking), but it really is true. I've met 'kin who were detectable as something else once you spent two minutes in their company, some who you'd never have known if they didn't mention it, and others who seemed to be 'kin but were actually humans with a fair amount of power. So in the end, it all boils down to personal experience, really.

Oh, and magic? Not all 'kin can work, not all 'kin believe in it, although you'll probably find a higher percentage of them that do. But that's a whole other question, isn't it? :)

otherkin are people who are either;

1. genetic descendants of what are now thought of as mythical races, (the werewolves of Greek history, cat people of ancient Africa, elves, faeries, etc)

2. people who were once that creature race in a distant past life, and part of that life force is in them in this life,

or,

3. people that believe they fall into one of the categories listed above.

I am an otherkin, wolf to be exact. some will tell you it is impossible, but just remember ANYTHING is possible

People who think they have actual physical heritage from a fantasy race? A little off. But still interesting to talk to...
